Seawatch Tsunami Detection Systems

Tsunami Component Of OCEANOR Seawatch System

The modular design of the OCEANOR Seawatch system allows the integration of additional modules into existing buoys that are based on the OCEANOR Seawatch technology. One such module is the Seawatch Deep Sea Module (SDSM) unit, ideally suited to detect the eventuality of a tsunami event.

The SDSM, consisting of a high-resolution pressure sensor interfaced to a processor, is mounted to a bottom anchor and attached to an acoustic release, which connects to a Seawatch surface buoy mooring.
The SDSM continuously measures the water pressure on the seabed transmitting at regular intervals to the surface, enabling verification of the system's operation. The pressure measurements are processed by the seabed processor in real-time. The resulting data are analysed for tsunami events. In the case of a likely tsunami event, the SDSM switches into fast data transmission mode, sending real-time data to the surface buoy, which transmits directly to shore using the satellite link.

The two-way communication feature allows interrogation of the SDSM from the surface to obtain recent pressure data or to change it to continuous mode.
In normal operation mode the surface buoy commands the SDSM typically once an hour to transmit the last 10 minute's average pressure together with status information. Besides displaying tidal variations, as seen from the data, this also tests the pressure sensor's performance over a day.

Implement Alarms Over Thresholds

During a tsunami event, the data reception system will indicate an alarm situation. An appropriate method of communication is chosen to distribute the alarm to key personnel. The data will at this stage be readily available for an expert team to evaluate, together with seismic data and other possible sources of information.
